'This is the pinnacle, and I'm just thrilled to be here' — The new voice of Lara Croft on taking on her 'biggest' role yet for upcoming Tomb Raider games
- Two Tomb Raider games are set to launch in 2027
- Both will feature a new incarnation of Lara Croft portrayed by Alix Wilton Regan
- The actor has described the role as "exhilarating and daunting in equal measure"
2027 is shaping up to be a huge year for Tomb Raider fans, with not one but two games set to release: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of the original 1996 Tomb Raider, and the all-new instalment Catalyst.
Both titles will introduce a new incarnation of protagonist Lara Croft, portrayed by actor Alix Wilton Regan. The portrayal is intended to bridge the gap between the classic series and the grittier trilogy kicked off by the 2013 reboot, creating one unified version of the character going forward.
I spoke to Regan in a wide-ranging interview at Summer Game Fest 2026, where she told me how pleased she is to be portraying the character. "I feel incredibly lucky to be bringing Tomb Raider into this new era," she began. "It's such an exciting time for the franchise when you think that they've got two games coming up and a TV show that's massive. I just feel very lucky to be a part of it."
She described the task of becoming such an iconic character as both "exhilarating and daunting in equal measure", likening it to "being on a rollercoaster that you're really happy to be on because it's thrilling, but you're also slightly s******g your pants at the same time."
She also revealed that she thought the role was her "biggest" yet: "I think taking on the role of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider would be the biggest role for any actress that works in the video game space. There is no bigger role. This is it. This is the pinnacle, and I'm just thrilled to be here."
She said that she wasn't feeling any pressure to try and differentiate her portrayal of the character from what fans have seen before. "I'm not worried about having to differentiate, because I feel very confident in the choice that we are going back to core Lara. Classic Lara, as she is called in the canon," she began.
"Within the context of classic Lara, my job as the actress portraying her is to leave no Laras behind. I'm very keen to understand, acknowledge, and respect everything that's been before across the Tomb Raider franchise, take the most important bits, assimilate them, digest them, and then bring them up to speed for modern audiences."
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set to launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 12, 2027—a date Regan said she will "absolutely" be staying up until midnight for. Tomb Raider: Catalyst will follow later that year.
